| Margot Voorhies Thompson
Margot Voorhies Thompson is a painter, printmaker and calligrapher. She is represented in Portland by the Laura Russo Gallery and has a show opening in May 2008. Her work encompasses commissions for public art at the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, OHSU’s Kohler Pavilion, Woodstock Public Library, Portland State University and the Oregon State Library. Fine press books and broadsides include work with authors Wendell Berry, Kim Stafford, John Daniel, and Rennard Strickland.
Margot uses calligraphy, collage, intaglio and woodcut printing techniques. She draws on traditions of illuminated text, including scroll, thangka and codex. Alphabets of her own invention encode her work with poetry, text and music. A connection exists between the historical mysticism and practice of scribal arts and the focus of her work which also refers to archaeology and paleography. Born in Oregon, she is inspired by the Northwest landscape and the natural world. Margot has received numerous awards for her work which is represented in public and private collections.
